The past couple of years there were warnings about keeping away from anything that would attract birds. Feeders, seed, even imitating bird calls seemed to be bad as the Bird Flu, Avian Influenza was feared to be in Canada. It seemed that this threat may be gone as I have not been hearing much about it at all for quite some time, until now. Not only has the avian influenza NOT disappeared from the country, but I see there is a case of it affecting Lunenburg County. Actually, there is a primary control zone (PCZ) just outside Bridgewater.
This is a bit scary. According to the government website, there are cases around the country. The good news is that it doesn’t transfer to humans, but not good for the birds.
Latest bird flu situation
We are currently responding to cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in birds across Canada. Avian influenza is spreading across the globe. Anyone with birds must practice good biosecurity habits to protect poultry and prevent disease. HPAI is not a food safety concern. There is no evidence to suggest that eating cooked poultry or eggs could transmit HPAI to humans.

So as someone that does have some chickens in this area my question is what can be done to prevent anything happening to my birds?
Avian influenza has been here for several years and unfortunately the risk is high due to the wild bird populations and their migration patterns.
The best way to protect your own flock is by adhering to good biosecurity practices. Also be aware of living inside the PCZ (primary control zone) and knowing what it means.
I found a few tips that should help.
