This past week I had the honor of MCing a couple of great events.
Thursday night the “Farm to Table” event raised $30,000 for the Kidney Foundation. Aside from a very tasty meal, we were treated to a performance by a true songsmith, Dave Carroll. That name will probably send you mind back to the viral video about miss handled luggage on the tarmac, United Breaks Guitars, but his talent goes far beyond that. Every tune has a story and a deep feeling behind it and takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride. A great example is “Now”
Saturday night was another great evening of musical entertainment at the 31st Hank Snow Tribute in Liverpool. There is no doubt that some of Hank Snow’s tunes are lyrical genius, but there were also some original tunes offered up by the performers that certainly caught your ear. One of those tunes was a song about the Swiss Air tragedy on the South Shore. The described image of a teddy bear in the salt water started a song that evokes emotion to say the least. You can find the video on our new Facebook page, Country 100.7 Announcers.
Since today is celebrated as “Poet’s Day” I thought that is the perfect excuse to look at emotional tunes. I can’t say I was really surprised by the songs that are listed as the saddest songs ever written.

The biggest question that came to my mind, is there a secret formula for writing emotional tunes? Turns out those in the know have offered up some guidelines on how to write memorable and sad songs:

I even found a video that offers up the secrets of writing a hit. So if you don’t think you are up for poetry on this Poet’s Day, just write a hit song instead. Have fun and remember me when the big cheques come in, haha.
