It’s sad to say, but when natural disasters happen, scammers will try and prey on people in vulnerable situations.
With the Wildfires happening RCMP are asking people to remain vigilant of fraud.
Here is an example. A facebook post we came across that had MANY red flags…
Can you spot the scam here?
I’ve highlighted some obvious red flags when you look at the authors profile:
She just joined the group and her profile is a page with only this post.
She has also turned off commenting so you can’t warn others.
Since the post is designed to tug at your heart strings, many people will share it and as a result, increase the audience for it.
Here is the scam: there is no great dane. Our friend Pricilla will at some point, update this post to completely change the subject. It will be a sales post or links to a shady website. Then, everyone who shared the “lost dog” will suddenly be advertising to everyone on their friends list.
A bit of due diligence can go a long way on Social Media.
