St. Patrick’s Day!! The day we wear green, drink green bevies and celebrate everything Irish.
But what is Saint Patrick’s day really about?
Well St Patrick’s Day is both a cultural and religious celebration. It is celebrated every year on March 17th. It’s the date believed to be the day Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland passed away.
So how did some of the things that represent “St. Patrick’s Day” come to be…
Leprechauns Are Likely Based off of Celtic Fairies. Fairies were tiny men and women who could use their magical powers for good or evil. In Celtic folktales, leprechauns were cranky souls, responsible for mending the shoes of other fairies.
Shamrocks or “seamroy”, is considered a sacred plant that symbolized the arrival of spring. According to legend, St. Patrick used the plant as a visual guide when explaining the Holy Trinity. Legend says that each leaf of the clover has a meaning: Hope, Faith, Love and Luck.
Now this one shocked me…Did you know the color of St. Patrick’s Day was originally blue. It’s believed St. Patrick’s Day started be associated with the color green because of Ireland’s nickname “The Emerald Isle”.
Oh and one other thing…Beer is often consumed on St.Patricks Day, especially Guinness. Would you believe that 13,000,000 pints of Guinness are are enjoyed worldwide on Saint Patrick’s Day. Crazy!!!
