I know this might be an odd topic given that we have another snow storm predicted for tomorrow, but while on vacation I discovered something that I find quite sad. It looks like Crescent Beach is losing its sand. Maybe this has been happening every year and it will return in time for beach season and I never noticed before, but right now it looks a bit scary.
I have grown up loving time spent at the beach. Camping at Rissers has always been a treat. Since I have become a licensed driver, a cruise across Crescent Beach in Lunenburg County has been a trip I have enjoyed very much. But unless the sand is returned, it doesn’t look like getting on the beach with a vehicle will be an easy task this year. We snapped these pictures of the ‘entrance’ just the other day and the Bush Island end of the beach is not any better.
Walking along the beach there are clear indications that at least a foot (30cm) of sand has disappeared since last summer. That is a scary thought. Granted there is still beautiful sand there, but if it is leaving at that rate, how long will it be before there are only rocks left behind? This is a concern all over the world too.
Disappearing beaches: Climate change could wipe out half of the world’s sandy shorelines
I hope this is not the case and the sand will stay for many generations to enjoy, but just incase, I think there will be more trips to the beach this summer.
No trouble to tell these posts have not seen the light of day in a looong time.
I did some searching and there are a couple of groups committed to protecting our coastlines. Coastal Action and Nova Scotia Nature Trust come up when searching “what can be done to save nova scotia sandy beaches”. The fact remains though that we can’t control the power of the shifting tides and mother nature will have her way regardless of what we try to do. All I can say is hopefully the sand returns and many more memories will be made on sandy Crescent Beach in years to come and not just stories about what it used to be like.
