More than 200 Nova Scotia Community College students have their heads down trying to fix problems in Nova Scotia
Challenge Nova Scotia is an annual event where teams of three to five NSCC students come up with a solution to a social issue, decided by the premier and NSCC president, facing the province.
Teams have 12 hours to submit a 90-second explainer video outlining their fix.
“This event offers a perfect opportunity for our future leaders to learn about decision-making and hone the important skill of collaboration in helping solve issues facing their communities,” said Premier Tim Houston in a news release. “As a solutionist myself, I’m eager to see the solutions the students develop and present.”
This year’s secret topic was announced to the teams by Premier Houston and NSCC President Don Bureaux this morning at 10 via pre-recorded video.
“Since the spring of 2020, our province has faced many unique challenges that continue to impact families, the economy and people’s livelihoods,” said Bureaux. “This has helped shape the question we’re posing to our students and offers a chance to consider how we might use this challenge as an opportunity to develop solutions.”
In other years, the event has addressed issues such as doctor recruitment, how to attract immigrant entrepreneurs and how to increase commercialization.
A panel will judge each video before submitting the winners to the premier for him to consider putting the solution into action.
First, second and third place winners will also receive a cash prize ranging between $1000 to $2000.
