Thursdays are reserved for nature education at the DesBrisay Museum as they kick off their first Learning in Nature workshop this week.
The free sessions are led by the Natural Resources Environmental Tech program at NSCC, and will focus on a number of nature themed activities for those looking to get out and explore.
The first session will teach participants the essentials of basic hiking and navigation, showing them how to properly traverse the land and read a compass.
Other workshops will touch on identifying wildlife found in Nova Scotia forests, edible plants on the South Shore and how to properly ID trees.
All sessions will be held in Woodlawn Gardens behind the museum each Thursday between 12:30-2:30, and participants are asked to bring a mask, sturdy footwear and a water bottle.
The sessions being held are as follows:
- Safe Hiking and Basic Navigation – November 5th – participants asked to bring a compass if possible.
- Wildlife Tracks – November 12th – Covers the basics of identifying wildlife by their tracks
- Edible Plants of Southwest Nova Scotia – November 19th – How to find and prepare wild foods
- Tree ID – November 26th – How to identify eight tree species found in Nova Scotia.
