A former long standing mayor for the town of Lunenburg has passed away.
Reverend Dr. D. Laurence Mawhinney passed away on Tuesday, leaving behind a decorated history of community service.
Mawhinney was first elected to town council in 1976, and served as mayor from 79-2012.
He is often referred to as the one responsible for changing Lunenburg from a small fishing town into a world class travel destination, due to his work to get the town designated as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995.
He was also part of the ministry for many Lunenburg and area Presbyterian churches, and spent 15 years on the Lunenburg County school boards, as well as served as president of the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance.
Flags are being flown at half mast for the remainder of the week in honour of Mawhinney, and memorial arrangements will be announced when available.
The public is invited to sign a book of remembrance for Mawhinney at the Dana L. Sweeney Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 23, noon to 3 p.m. and Thursday, September 24, from noon to 3 p.m.
