Sailing like most other recreation activities had to be put on hold this summer due to the pandemic but now as case numbers have dropped off the Lunenburg Yacht Club (LYC) is prepared to host one of the few regattas set to take place this year.
The Welcome Back Regatta takes place from August 21-23, out of the LYC which is located on Herman’s Island.
This week traditionally would have seen Chester Race Week take place which is one of the largest regattas in the area but the pandemic led to its cancelation. As a result of that cancelation and others, sailors have been looking for opportunities to race and with Atlantic health protocols being loosened it provided an exciting opportunity to the LYC.
“Given current global conditions, it’s really a unique privilege to be able to put on an event and race sailboats with our friends from across Nova Scotia in home waters,” said Andreas Josenhans, LYC’s Commodore Elect and an America’s Cup winner.
“We’re excited to fill the need for world-class racing here at home. It’s a chance to get out on the water and enjoy excellent sailing in the comfort of your own backyard.”
Even if you’re not a sailor the event promises to be a fun spectacle to watch according to Press Officer Josh Healey, “It should be a lot of fun and although the way the club is set up doesn’t really offer a great view from land we invite anyone with a boat to come out and check it out.”
The club expects anywhere from thirty to forty boats to attend, which would make it the largest keelboat regatta in Nova Scotia this summer. Registration is currently underway for several fleets, including Sonar, J105, IOD, Farr 30, and PHRF.
