One last structure needs to be removed before work starts on a new playground at Bridgewater Elementary School.
Playground Committee Co-Chair, Megan Comstock says the piece of equipment will be removed starting Monday with hopes that landscaping work will begin by early August.
The previous playground lasted only 10 years.
Town council recently approved $36,000 for the first phase of the project which will be an obstacle course.
Mayor David Mitchell says it’s an urgent situation.
“If nothing is done then when school starts in September there won’t be a piece of equipment for those kids at the school. Council felt that it is really heartbreaking; an elementary school should have a playground.”
Mitchell says council is frustrated that they give $2.1-million to the Nova Scotia government for education and yet, the province is not responsible for a school playground.
The South Shore Regional School Board is providing in-kind services worth approximately $16,000. Donations from the community are also being accepted.
The first phase is expected to be completed this fall.
The full project has a budget of $400,000.
