After years of hard work and planning, the Mahone Bay natural playground is nearly complete.
What was once a pile of dirt, rocks, sand and some logs has been transformed into a ship playstructure.
Volunteers were laying sod last weekend.
Chair of the Mahone Bay Playground Committee Kristen Martell says the new playground has helped bring neighbours together.
“What we’re seeing is there’s more people coming now. There’s kind of been a rejuvenation and it feels like more of a gathering place. It builds that sense of community again which is exactly what we were trying to achieve.”
Martell says surrounded as it is by the Tiny Tots playground, the pond, ball field and Jubilee woods, the park really compliments the area.
“So there’s a lot in that area and it’s a very welcoming space. It’s been great to see it come alive again.”
Martell says by using natural materials such as wood, sand, water and rocks, kids can play in a more creative and unstructured way.
A new sign and revamped parking area are coming and plans are in the works to hold a grand opening later this summer.
