The chef de mission for Nova Scotia’s Canada Winter Games team says experience will help her in the position.
Cathy Burton has been a coach, manager and fan at five Canada Games involving her three daughters.
She made it to Red Deer, Alberta on Tuesday, ahead of the first Nova Scotia athletes arrival on Thursday.
Burton says she and other staff are trying to make sure they are comfortable.
“We’re going over to check out the residences to make sure the beds are good; we’re checking the menu at the athletes village dining hall and checking out the venues just to make sure we can prepare our athletes for when they get here so they can focus on their event.”
Burton, who is from Hammonds Plains, is hopeful Nova Scotia will do well.
Athletes brought home four medals in the last winter games in 2015 and 12 in 2011.
The opening ceremony is Friday night with competition beginning Saturday.
Overall, 211 athletes will compete on behalf of the province including six from the South Shore.
They include Tia Wamboldt of Bridgewater (Trampoline), Vincent d’Entremont of Hebbville (Artistic Gymnastics), Kate MacKinnon of Chester (Snowboard), Madison Beck of Lunenburg (Women’s Hockey), Colin Ward of Mahone Bay (Cross Country Skiing), and Claire Miner of Greenfield (Biathlon).
Peggy Falkenham Boutilier of Lunenburg is the lone coach from the South Shore. She is head coach of the Biathlon team.
