The federal government has announced more than $173,000 in funding for three projects in Queens County.
Two of them will benefit the popular Astor Theatre in downtown Liverpool.
Fifty-five thousand dollars will replace the roof at the Town Hall Arts and Cultural centre, which houses the Astor.
Another $37,000 will go to continuing upgrades inside the theatre itself.
Chairman Michael Boudreau says they gave Ottawa a wish list and it was granted.
“Well, we’d like to do the floors, and we have an issue with the carpet because if you redo one then you should do the other. The stage needs to be redone.”
Boudreau says investing in the 115 year-old building is good for the whole town.
“We draw from as far away as New Glasgow traditionally. What that means for the town is hotels, meals…the people who come and play here want to come back.”
Boudreau says they hope to have the work complete by the end of May.
The other $81,000 will make the Gold Mines Trail safer for walkers, cyclists, and off-highway-vehicles.
Regional Trails Coordinator Laura Barkhouse says this takes it from an unmanaged route to a managed trail.
“There will be stop signs at public road crossings, yields at driveways so that when people are on the trails they’re aware of different crossings and it just makes it safer for everybody.”
Barkhouse says work has already begun.
She says they hope to have the trail complete by fall.
