The historic Liverpool Courthouse is getting new life under the guidance of the Queens County Museum.
The courthouse, which has been vacant since 2015, will become a Museum of Justice.
Manager of the Queens County Museum, Linda Rafuse, says the 163 year-old building is a heritage property and will house a collection of Bowater artifacts from the plant that closed in 2012.
“We’re here to preserve history. We’ve taken another little architectural gem and great piece of history under our wing to preserve for future generations.”
Rafuse says besides the Bowater collection, the museum will dedicate the rest of the courthouse to its history and to justice.
The Region of Queens and Museum signed off on a three-year agreement.
“It was a real priviledge for us as a Museum and our board was thrilled that we could go into a partnership with the Region of Queens to turn that courthouse into a museum of justice.”
Rafuse is optimistic the courthouse will be open by summer.
