A group of teenagers in Lunenburg County is hoping to make the wait for a permanent skate park easier.
Twelve students from Bridgewater Jr. Sr. High are using their Options and Opportunities class to build equipment for a temporary park.
Teacher Allan Muir says the project teaches them an important lesson.
“To see students engaged in something that benefits more than just them,” he says, “and how excited they get about it, I really do think it continues on.”
Muir says he offered the students a choice between starting a small business or doing something for the community.
He says the vote was unanimous.
“They’re engaged and I can see them working. They’re show up for class on time. I can really see them buying in [and] taking ownership over the obstacles.”
The equipment will be in place by the end of the school year.
Meanwhile, Councillor Jennifer MacDonald Councillor Jennifer MacDonald says the new permanent park is expected to cost $500,000 when all is said and done.
She says they’re still about $80,000 away from that goal.
“We’ve put together an application for a provincial grant. We’re putting together a crowd funding campaign, and we’re also going out looking for corporate sponsorship.”
MacDonald says they’re using the talents of local youth.
“The youth will be involved in actually creating the [crowd funding] video and hopefully very involved in helping us spread the word and get people excited about it.”
The campaign is expected to launch in early June.
