Hundreds of new doctors were welcomed to Nova Scotia over the past year.
Nova Scotia Health says in a news release, 253 arrived between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025.
That, they say, is a net gain of 187 doctors working in the province, nearly double from the year before.
Of the new doctors, 89 are family physicians and 164 are specialists, 18 who started working at the IWK.
Premier Tim Houston says, “Our province attracted 40 per cent more doctors overall this past fiscal year than the year prior. That includes 60 per cent more family doctors recruited than in the year before. ”
“That goes to show the success of our efforts to make Nova Scotia an attractive and welcoming workplace for doctors from around the world.”
More than one third of those recruited were trained internationally, from places like the United Kingdon and United States.
Dalhousie Medical School was also a key focus of recruitment.
Nova Scotia Health says recruitment success in family medicine has also contributed to the number of Nova Scotians on the Need a Family Practice Registry, declining.
