In response to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation, Cape Breton MP Mike Kelloway shared his thoughts on the leader’s legacy and the future of the Liberal Party. Kelloway expressed deep gratitude for Trudeau’s nearly nine years of leadership, particularly during difficult times like the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation.
“My initial response is one of gratitude,” Kelloway said. “A lot of positive things came from his leadership, including social programs and significant funding for various initiatives.”
Kelloway emphasized that Trudeau’s legacy will be shaped by key policies like the child benefit, dental care, and $10-a-day daycare. He also pointed to the introduction of dental care under Canada’s health card system as an important step in improving public healthcare.
“Millions of Canadians lack dental insurance, which leads to serious health issues,” Kelloway noted. “The introduction of dental care under the health card system is a significant step forward in the evolution of Canada’s healthcare system.”
Looking ahead, Kelloway is optimistic about the next chapter for the party and the selection of a new leader. He stressed the need for leadership that understands both government mechanics and the concerns of everyday Canadians.
“We need to refine our policies and have an honest discussion about where we go from here,” Kelloway said.
