The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) has reported a fifty-five percent increase in thefts across its retail stores in 2024, reflecting a troubling rise in shoplifting.
According to Statistics Canada, shoplifting crimes increased by eighteen percent nationwide in 2023, with Nova Scotia recording the highest rates in the country.
Over 7,100 incidents of shoplifting were reported in the province last year.
While the NSLC employs a dedicated security team and has monitoring systems in place, shoplifting appears to be undeterred as it continues to rise.
An NSLC spokesperson added that staff are trained to address theft incidents but emphasized that customer safety is a priority.
Both the NSLC and RCMP advise shoppers not to intervene if they witness theft, warning that such situations could escalate to violence.
