The RCMP are renewing their efforts to solve the 2020 murder of Donny Lohnes, whose death remains unsolved after more than four years.
On October 25, 2020, Lohnes was attacked outside his home on Jippie Avenue in Pine Grove. Although he went about his daily activities in the following days, he collapsed at work and later died in the hospital on November 1, 2020.
Since then, the RCMP have interviewed over 100 individuals, gathered evidence, and executed search warrants in their ongoing investigation. Despite their efforts, they believe there are still people who have information that could assist in solving the case.
“We’re at a point now where we know there are people, either in the public or people who may have information about what happened to Donnie, who haven’t come forward previously,” said RCMP Cpl. Chris Marshall. “So we’re at a point where we’re asking for these people to come forward.”
To generate new leads, the RCMP have placed billboard outside of the Cookville Detachment and are offering a reward of up to $150,000 through the Nova Scotia Major Unsolved Crimes Reward Program. The program has been in place for over two years, but the reward has now been paired with the new signage to increase visibility and prompt further information from the public.
“This is just another strategy to try and get Donnie’s case back into the public eye,” Cpl. Marshall explained. “The road where the detachment is located is one of the most traveled in Lunenburg County, so we thought it would be a good spot for large signs.”
While the reward may encourage some to come forward, Cpl. Marshall acknowledged that others may have concerns about safety, particularly given the violent nature of the crime. He reassured potential witnesses that their identities can be protected.
“We can mitigate risks if you have concerns,” said Cpl. Marshall. “Our officers are well-trained in how to minimize those risks.”
The RCMP are urging anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, to contact the Cookville Detachment, the Southwest Nova Major Crime Unit, or the Major Unsolved Crimes Reward Program. According to Cpl. Marshall, even the smallest detail could be critical to solving the case.
“Just make the call—that’s the biggest thing,” he said. “Hopefully, enough people will come forward with the information we need to bring resolution for Donnie’s family.”
