Nova Scotia is taking the next step toward offshore wind energy development by proposing five areas for potential wind farms. The sites include French Bank, Middle Bank, Sable Island Bank, Sydney Bight, and Western/Emerald Bank. They were identified following a regional assessment conducted with federal partners.
The assessment originally considered eight areas, with five now shortlisted based on further review. These locations will undergo additional evaluation before final designation, and the province is inviting public feedback on the proposed sites until April 14.
Once the areas are finalized, the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Energy Regulator will manage a competitive process to license specific sites for wind farm development.
The regulator will work with the province, federal government, the Mi’kmaq, fishers, industry representatives, and local communities throughout the process.
Nova Scotia and the federal government jointly manage the province’s offshore energy resources under the Canada-Nova Scotia Accord Acts.
