Nova Scotia’s police watchdog has charged an RCMP officer with assault following an investigation into an incident last month.
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) says it received a referral from Bridgewater Police on December 22 about an incident involving an off-duty officer two days earlier.
SiRT launched an investigation the same day and has now laid a charge against a Constable under section 266 of the Criminal Code.
The charge relates to an alleged assault involving a woman known to him. Smith is scheduled to appear in Nova Scotia Provincial Court in Bridgewater on February 19.
SiRT, which investigates serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, says it will not provide further comment as the case is before the courts.
