Happy World Donkey Day!
I know today is McHappy Day and we certainly want you to drop by McDonald’s for a meal, treat, or all meals today. Every purchase will help Ronald McDonald House AND on the South Shore, Special Olympics. So that is your excuse to stop by the golden arches and enjoy.
Now since donkeys are being celebrated today, let’s take a look at these critters. I will tell you, longevity they have. When we got “Jacques De Ass” I thought, like most animals, he would likely be around for 15 maybe 20 years. But then my wife starting poking around the donkey sites online and there were conversations about what to feed the older animals…. “What should I feed my advanced age donkey, he is 35!!!” AND that is not even old compared to Suzy, haha.
Oldest donkey ever
These are quite the animals. Jacques is seeming fearless when it comes to protecting the pasture. When the coyotes howl, he will gather the animals in the far corner and go toward the noise. He is a guide, will often walk new animals around the surrounding fence as if to show the boundaries. But if there is something he doesn’t want to do, there is nothing more stubborn. That is actually the animal just being extremely cautious. Donkeys have a very strong sense of self-preservation! What is often attributed to stubbornness is actually the careful analysis of a situation and whether it might pose a threat or may be unpleasant for them.
That is one of the fun facts around the majestic donkey.
The other thing that I always found interesting about these critters, their names. Aside from maybe a groundhog, I can’t think of another animal with more names to describe it. Now in the case of the donkey, there are varied descriptions to go along with the different names. We may use the words interchangeably, but donkey, jackass, burro and mule aren’t really synonyms. Each term does relate to a donkey, but a jackass is not a mule, and all burros are not jackasses.
Are Mules, Burros and Jackasses All Donkeys?
I hope this helped to expand you donkey knowledge. You are welcome, haha
Happy World Donkey Day, maybe a good celebration would be to watch Donkey on Shrek. OR read the Wonky Donkey… Of course there is that overlooked country song by Jerrod Niemann “Donkey” too.
