This is something that definitely loses it’s luster as you get older, the thought of losing a tooth.
Today is the first of two Tooth Fairy Days for the year. Now the first question that comes to mind is Why are there 2 Tooth Fairy days? I don’t have that answer, but it is interesting to note that they are six months apart AND dentists suggest a cleaning/checkup twice a year.
Even though it does seem that the August observance is more connected to Canada, I thought it can’t hurt to look at today’s Tooth Fairy Day too. Might remind you to floss this morning, haha.
So where did the Tooth Fairy come from? This enamel gather of the night has been on duty for a LONG time. Probably gathered baby teeth from Santa and the Easter Bunny.
The history and variations of the Tooth Fairy’s image around the world is quite impressive, as is the power of lost teeth. Everything from protecting children in the next life to preserving the life of a parent in battle. Baby teeth are so much more than just the tools used to enjoy your first steak dinner.
Now we also have to look at the potential income from those pearly whites as they fall out, the FIRST time.
Seems that the value of baby teeth has been increasing almost as much as rent, gas and groceries. I remember I got old coins, a silver dollar for the big ones and a 50 cent piece for the smaller. Times have changed for sure. It is suggested that in 2024 the price paid for a baby tooth is over $6.
This chart I found looks at what the Tooth Fairy has paid for teeth for the past 20+ years and we’re looking at six times the value today.

I guess my best advice kids is since dental costs have also been increasing, invest the income from baby teeth, could help with future repairs. Or if rates continue to rise, could put you through college, haha.
Remember to floss and Happy Tooth Fairy Day.
