Earlier this year the Shelburne Arena was appealing for donations and funding to replace it’s chiller which broke in November, now they’ve surpassed their $200,000 goal.
The Nova Scotia government is the latest to announce their support, announcing a $100,000 contribution on Tuesday.
However, the facility has already been repaired thanks to contributions made earlier by the Municipality and Town of Shelburne who made contributions of up to $120,000 and $80,000 respectively.
The Arena opted to repair their existing chiller over purchasing a new one, which they estimate will cost $150,000 once fully complete.
Shelburne Mayor Harold Locke says whether or not they will have a surplus remains to be seen, “Both municipal units made commitments that were ‘up to’ now with the provincial money it could be less,” Locke said. “I’ll be advocating that the town gives the full $80,000 and any extra can go towards a capital reserve to help with repairs needed down the road,”.
Locke says the facility will need a roof replacement in the next few years, so the idea of the Arena having some extra money tucked away seems prudent in his eyes.
