Residents of Brooklyn in Queens County with PO Boxes are dealing with the sudden closure of the local post office.
Owners of PO Boxes inside the Canada Post Office which was in the Wa-Su-Wek building received letters last week from Canada Post indicating that effective October 12 the office would be closing permanently.
Those who had their mail delivered directly to their homes are not impacted by the closure however anyone with PO Box inside the building must now travel to Liverpool to pick up their mail. The Liverpool post office is approximately 5 kilometers away from the now-closed office in Brooklyn.
Queens District 4 Councilor Vicki Amirault who represents the riding where the office was has been searching for solutions ever since and has indicated that Canada Post is already working to rectify the situation.
Amirault’s post indicates that those who lost their mailboxes will soon have access to 19 new community mailboxes that will be installed outside the old office.
There are already some outside community mailboxes located on-site that are still being serviced.
Once installed those who lost their PO Boxes will be able to receive their mail and small packages closer to home, however, any large packages will still be held at the Liverpool office.
Those who had PO Boxes can also now return their keys for the post office doors to the Wa-Su-Wek facility for a refund.
