Two candidates vying for the leadership of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party held their second debate last night.
Yarmouth MLA Zach Churchill and Preston MLA Angela Simmonds spoke about many issues facing the province during the hour long debate in Sydney.
Churchill, a former health and education minister, talked about problems in healthcare.
“We really have to re-think how we’re doing healthcare in this province. Otherwise, we’re not going to get anywhere. We have a labour shortage at a time when the biggest pressure of all time is coming through our system, and impacting our healthcare system,” said Churchill.
Simmonds says it’s important to have the same level of service in all areas, including rural Nova Scotia.
She talked about the importance of creating opportunities for the younger generation to work within the private sector.
“One of the ways we do that is breaking down barriers. Making sure that there are spaces and room for people when they show up, and that they’re able to learn on the job,” said Simmonds.
The candidates also talked about ways to lighten the load on the housing crisis, and how to expand rural economic development.
One more debate is scheduled for next month in Liverpool, and the party will elect a new leader on July 9th.
