A final farewell to former federal and provincial NDP leader Alexa McDonough in the House of Commons.
Politicians of all political stripes paid tribute with a moment of silence on Monday.
Halifax Liberal M-P Andy Filmore says it’s a privilege to oversee the riding she once served.
“Alexa broke through barriers and led a generation of women into politics,” Fillmore said. “She will be remembered forever for her fearless and compassionate leadership. I invite all members to join me in extending our sincere condolences to her family, her loved ones, and the millions that she inspired.”
McDonough became the first woman to lead a major political party in Canada when she was elected the leader of the Nova Scotia NDP in 1980.
She served as a member of the Nova Scotia Legislature from 1981 to 1994, representing the Halifax Chebucto and Halifax Fairview ridings.
In 1995, she was elected leader of the federal NDP – a position she held until 2003.
I took a moment during @OurCommons debate this morning to pay my respects to a predecessor, former Halifax MP (and so much more), Alexa McDonough — a trailblazer who meant so much to so many. pic.twitter.com/wBJujUUVht

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says her passing is a loss to all Canadians as she also dedicated her life to social justice.
The 77-year-old passed away last month following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
