If you’ve thought about keeping your kids home from school, you’re not alone.
Premier Tim Houston estimated Wednesday as much as eight per cent of families kept their kids home in the first few days after schools reopened last week.
Paul Wozney, the President of the Nova Scotia Teachers’ Union, says not supporting at-home learning means many families will need to send their kids to school, even with the risks of the Omicron wave.
“When we talk about an approach that is going to create winners and losers, the families that can afford to keep their kids home are the families that are most likely to be able to afford tutors and supports.”
Wozney says that can have serious knock-on effects.
He says it’s a critical time of year, with high schoolers preparing for exams.
“Who is sending their kids and who’s keeping them home,” he says. “There are equity ramification around that question that, largely, are being ignored.”
Wozney says failure in those exams could means students don’t graduate.
