The federal Liberals look to keep the red wave going in Atlantic Canada and especially in Nova Scotia.
Results will first come in from Newfoundland and then 30 minutes later we’ll see the ballots counted in the Maritimes. Polls close in our province at 8:30 p.m. and this page will be updated throughout the night.
In 11 federal ridings in our province, 10 are Liberal, only West Nova has a Conservative incumbent heading into tonight. While the Liberals swept the Atlantic provinces in 2015, in the last election in 2019 they lost four seats to the Conservatives, and one each to the Greens and NDP.
About 6.8 million Canadians have already voted, either through advanced polling or by mail.
Voting hours are staggered so that majority of results come in around the same time.
Polls in Newfoundland and Atlantic time zones run from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Eastern time from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Central time from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saskatchewan and Mountain time from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Pacific time from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
At dissolution, the Liberals had 155 seats, the Conservatives 119, the Bloc Quebecois 32, the NDP 24 and the Greens two. There were also five Independents and one vacancy.
A party needs 170 seats for a majority

Local Ridings to Watch
South Shore-St. Margarets
The riding covers most of the province’s South Shore and includes the counties of Shelburne, Queens and Lunenburg. Fisheries and Oceans Minister, Bernadette Jordan is looking for her third term to represent the riding, having first been elected as an MP in 2015. Jordan is running against NDP Olivia Dorey, Conservative Rick Perkins and the Green’s Thomas Trappenberg.
Halifax
The urban riding of Halifax includes the peninsula and extends west toward the Armdale and Spryfield areas. Incumbent Liberal, Andy Fillmore is hoping for re-election against former NDP MLA Lisa Roberts, who resigned from provincial politics to run federally. Cameron Ells is running for the Conservatives, as is former Green interim leader Jo-Ann Roberts. B. Alexander Hebert is representing the People’s Party.
Halifax West
Encompassing west end of Halifax in addition to Bedford and the Upper Hammonds Plains, Tantallon and Terence Bay areas. The riding of former House speaker Geoff Regan, who retired after 24 years as MP for the district is up for grabs in 2021. A well-known face in provincial politics, Lena Metlege Diab is running for the Liberal party federally this time after announcing her candidacy last Spring. The Conservatives have Eleanor Humphries to run in Halifax West, while the NDP will be represented by Jonathan Roberts. The Green Party candidate is a former Halifax City Councillor, Richard Zurawski. Julie Scott is running for the People’s Party of Canada. This riding covers the west end of Halifax and Bedford, Upper Hammonds Plains, Tantallon and Terence Bay.
Dartmouth-Cole Harbour
A riding which saw controversy at the beginning of the campaign after Tom Myers, the Conservative candidate dropped out of the race on August 30 following an allegation of sexual assault. The Conservative party did not seek a new candidate for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour, where Darren Fisher is looking for re-election once again after first ascending to the federal seat for the Liberals in 2015. Fisher remains challenged by Kevin Payne, a small business owner who is on the ballot representing the NDP. The Green Party has activist Rana Zaman with Michelle Lindsay running for the People’s Party.
Sackville-Preston Chezzetcook
A long time NDP stronghold when much of it fell under the old Sackville-Eastern Shore district — it has now seen some recent Liberal success. This riding covers the HRM coast from Lake Charlotte to Jeddore Harbour and includes Preston and Sackville. Liberal Darrell Samson seeks re-election once again, having gained the seat on the initial Trudeau red wave that swept Atlantic Canada in 2015. Samson is also former superintendent of the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial and is running against Jenna Chisholm for the NDP, who still look to provide the main competition in this riding. Angela Conrad is running for the Conservatives, Anthony Edmonds with the Greens and Earl Gosse is with the PPC.
