The Chester Playhouse has been left with significant damage after a Friday afternoon fire.
There were no injuries but little is known about what caused the blaze or if the building is salvageable.
Some surrounding buildings also sustained damage , and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Chester Playhouse Executive Director, Andrew Chandler said the community is devastated.
“Just about everybody in our area has some memories connected to the playhouse, either seeing shows or growing up doing theater camp, or being on the stage,” explained Chandler. “Everybody is really upset and really eager to help.”
He adds that he is extremely grateful to all of the firefighters for all of their hard work.
“It was really inspiring to see so many people working so hard and so bravely to save our playhouse and we can’t thank them enough for their hard work,” said Chandler.
The playhouse was in the final stages of a massive restoration project when it erupted in flames.
The the project, which included work to both the interior and exterior of the building cost over 1.3 million dollars.
“It was really awful to see it going up in smoke that day,” Chandler explained.
He said although there is still a lot of uncertainty, the organization is still planning on hosting some outdoor events once it is safe to do so.
Chandler added that they are unsure of what will be needed to move forward but in the meantime, those interested in donating to their general operating fund can do so by clicking HERE.
