On Tuesday, Nova Scotia experienced some extreme weather in the form of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and even hail in some parts of the province, which have yielded some amazing photographs.
As the storm began clearing rainbows could be seen across the province and in many cases, people were able to capture a double rainbow on film.
Environment Canada says Nova Scotia is now in its peak thunderstorm season as temperatures are getting higher.
Meteorologist Ian Hubbard says the clouds like those seen on Tuesday are called shelf clouds.
“People have often described them as what they imagine a large spaceship might look like but in reality, they are usually the leading clouds of a thunderstorm that tend to create those dark long clouds,” Hubbard said.
Hubbard says storms like Tuesdays are likely to return throughout the Spring and Summer but he says it is rare to get conditions as scenic.
“It was essentially the perfect storm for photographers dark clouds, bright skies, rainbows and I’ve even seen some photos that capture the rainbows and the lighting strikes at the same time.”
The storm arrived in the early afternoon along the South Shore and tracked along the mainland of the province, meaning virtually everyone in the province got a chance to marvel at the scenes.
