Liverpool Highschool (LHS) is set to break ground on its new community outdoor space.
The project includes an 8-lane running track installed around the existing soccer fields, space for basketball and beach volleyball, a community garden, and first nations learning space.
LHS Vice-Principal Todd Symes says the idea was originally suggested by students, “Members of the student council originally brought the idea to the athletic director and we’ve been supporting them ever since.”
“I think those original students would be pleased to see virtually everything they wanted is included in the plans.”
The project comes at a cost of $330,000 and some of the funds have already been raised.
The Evergreen Foundation provided a $15,000 grant, donations have been made from Help Promoting Schools, the SSRCE, the student council, and the school itself.
Symes says they hope to generate the rest of the money from school fundraisers and events, as well they have set up a GoFundMe page online.
Liverpool’s Sarah Mitton who will be attending the Summer Olympics for shot-put and is also an alumnus of LHS has reached out to the school to offer her help, as well she offered advice on the shot-put set up so it can help her and others hone their abilities close to home.
The school is also hoping that they will have a new mascot design approved in the near future so it can be incorporated into the new space. Students recently expressed a desire to change the logo due to its offensive representation of first nations people.
The project will begin very shortly and Symes says they hope to have it up and running by September 2021.
