An animal shelter on the South Shore is reminding pet owners to make sure your furry friends aren’t outside for too long on Tuesday.
Bitterly cold temperatures are expected throughout the region – especially later in the afternoon when the wind-chill will make it feel like minus 22.
Manager of the SHAID Tree Animal Shelter in Whynotts Settlement, Kelly Inglis, says dogs and cats can get frostbite and freeze to death in these conditions.
“Keep those pets inside as much as you can,” Inglis said. “Short, short potty breaks.”
She says it might be a good idea to skip the daily walk.
“I would recommend most people just skip the one day, it you need a walk, make sure it’s short. There are jackets and booties that you can put on your dogs….but it’s going to be really cold,” Inglis explains. “Just imagine going outside in a t-shirt…that’s how your dog is going to feel.”
Inglis suggests if you have feral cats around your home to place a box with some straw around so they have some shelter or let them in your barn.
“The box with straw will give them a little bit of shelter to help them get through,” She said.
Conditions aren’t expected to improve much by Tuesday night, as Environment Canada is forecasting low temperatures and feel like temperature of minus 18.
Temps will warm up and the winds are expected to diminish on Wednesday.
