Lunenburg will be celebrating Black Heritage Month on Friday, February 12 by raising the Pan-African flag.
The flag-raising will take place at the UNESCO flagpoles located at the intersection of Prince Street and Townsend Street at 12:00 p.m.
The Pan-African flag represents the worldwide movement that aims to encourage and strengthen bonds of solidarity between all indigenous ethnic groups of African descent.
According to the town, BIPOC representatives will attend the event along with representatives from the South Shore Regional Centre for Education and Bluenose Academy.
The public is invited to attend the event provided you observe physical distancing protocols and are not experiencing any COVID-19 related symptoms.
During a council meeting at the start of the month, Lunenburg Mayor Matt Risser spoke about the importance of events like this. Risser said, “I encourage residents, businesses, and community groups to participate in the activities and celebrations and to take the opportunity to reflect on the story of Nova Scotia’s vibrant African Nova Scotian Community.”
The event will also be live-streamed on the towns’ Youtube page so you can watch from home.
