Salvation Army officers Majors Wilson and Darlene Sutton are moving on after six years spent serving the community of Bridgewater and Lunenburg County.
They will be moving to Yarmouth to begin their new ministry next week, and although it isn’t too far away it is an emotional time for both of them.
“We’ve enjoyed our time here in Bridgewater, we found the people very welcoming and they certainly respect the Salvation Army and what the organization does,” said Darlene Sutton.
“It’s always sad when you have to leave but that’s a part of our calling and so we just press on.”
The Sutton’s have been part of the organization for 20 years, and previously were stationed in Miramichi, New Brunswick.
Wilson Sutton says that when they arrived in Bridgewater they spent time learning what needs the area had.
“We reached out to many different groups and organizations and partnered with them to determine the needs and worked with them to see what we could do to help.”
He says that is what they plan to do when they arrive in Yarmouth.
“The first thing you have to do is get unpacked and settled into a new house, and then you get out into the community,” said Darlene.
“You meet your church family and people in the community and work the best that you can with them.”
Some of the things they most enjoyed helping with during there time here were Christmas hampers and toys, and food boxes.
The Suttons will be holding a drive-by at the Salvation Army church at 116 Pleasant Street, on Thursday evening from 7-8 p.m. for people who would like to wish them a fond farewell.
