Liverpool's Slappy's Skateschool held its first session Saturday in Bridgewater
A new skateboarding school is shredding its way into Bridgewater to teach kids the basic fundamentals of the sport.
Originally started in Liverpool, Slappy’s Skateschool held its first session at the Bridgewater Skate park Saturday to give kids interested in the sport the chance to explore the world of skateboarding at their own pace.
Wes Fleming, owner and operator of the school, says his school focuses on the foundations and basics of skateboarding, such as pushing and basic tricks, while also teaching them about park etiquette.

Owner Wes Fleming hopes the school will keep kids interested in skateboarding, and out of trouble.
“Park etiquette is a huge one, because its not something that is really taught,” he said, “It’s more something you learn as you come to the park. It kind of takes a year or so to figure it out, so this will get them on the fast track and help kids avoid collisions.”
The school aims to help kids of all skill levels, from teaching beginners how to properly push on a board, to teaching more advanced skaters how to properly ollie or grind.
Fleming says he aimed to make the school as accessible as possible for kids who may not be able to afford a new board or gear.
“A huge deterrence to kids is parents don’t want to shell out a lot of money for something they may only use once or twice,” he said.
“Skateboards may seem basic, but they are pretty expensive for the good equipment, so the Town of Bridgewater has a ton of equipment they are letting me use for the skateschool. I’m super thankful for that.”
Fleming hopes the school will help kids stay interested in skateboarding, and keep them out of trouble.
Sessions will run each Saturday from August 24 to Oct. 26, and cost $25 per session. Those interested in registering can reach out to the Town of Bridgewater’s recreation department.
