South Shore Public Libraries is in the market for a new bus.
The organization is working to raise the almost half a million dollars it will need to replace the ten-year-old mobile library.
Troy Meyers, Chief Librarian says the vehicle extends services into communities who may not otherwise have access.
“We like to call it a mobile branch. So it’s not a bus full of books, it’s an actual full-service branch that we move from community to community.”
Meyers says the new bus will be custom built.
“We bring a wi-fi connection that they can use, we do a little bit of programming. This new bus, we’d like to be able to do more of that.”
He says the bus must be ordered a year in advance to allow that kind of customization.
Meyers says they would like to offset the costs with donations as any remaining expense will come from the library’s capital budget.
He’s hoping to see the new bus in service in two years.
