Heritage Day will forever hold a special place in the hearts of our country’s newest citizens.
Yesterday, 29 people from 12 countries gathered at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax to take their oath and become Canadians.
A Lunenburg family was part of that group.
Lars Kurandt-Jaeger says Canada is the only home his two children have really known.
A point that was made on a family trip to Germany last summer.
“So last year, we’d been in Germany for six weeks, so quite a time span. And after about three weeks, the kids were asking Mom to go back home, back to Canada.”
Kurandt-Jaeger wanted to fully embrace the country by becoming a citizen.
“My heritage is German, and we all know about the history of Germany in the last century. I feel an important part of being a citizen is having the right to vote.”
And he is looking forward to casting his ballot in the next election.
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism MP Andy Filmore says this is what makes Canada great.
“As the Prime Minister often reminds us, Canada’s diversity is its strength. So, these new Canadians are our strength.”
