The HMCS Protecture has arrived safely at the Port Mersey Park in Queens County.
The former navy supply ship is one of two vessels that will be dismantled by Antigonish-based construction company R.J. MacIsaac.
General Manager David MacDonald says there are several steps that need to happen before the ship gets taken apart.
“The ships been sealed since it left Esquimalt on Feb 24,” he says. “So, next week is establishing access to the vessel and getting the air quality up and tested.”
Hiring for 50 full-time positions is also expected to take place over the next few weeks.
He says the former Bowater site was chosen, in part, with hiring in mind.
“There is a pool of labour available with skills that fit into the type of project we’re about to kick off.”
MacDonald says real work will begin in about three weeks with dismantling set to start in late summer.
