Emergency personnel played it safe after an object washed up on shore in Lockeport. The item, known as a marine locator marker, was found this morning by a local resident at Crescent Beach before RCMP were notified. Police secured the device until an explosive deployment unit from 14 Wing Greenwood arrived on scene. The smoke marker is used for reference points in the water during training exercises. Public Affairs Officer at 14 Wing Greenwood, Lieutenant Sylvain Rousseau, says there was never a threat to the public. He says, “Usually those devices will get filled with water and then once the smoke is done, it consumes itself and sinks to the botttom. So, from time to time I guess they float and come to shore.” Rousseau says the item will be disposed of appropriately at the base.
