Yesterday was the start of National Drowning Prevention Week.
The Lifesaving Society branch in Nova Scotia have organized events and activities throughout the province.
The society says they want to bring awareness to enjoying the water safely, as most drownings occur in July, August and September.
The events will highlight boat safety, being water smart, life-jacket use and learning to swim to survive.
Executive Director Mike Maguire says life-jackets don’t work unless your wear them.
“You hear stories of folks having them in the boat with them, but it’s difficult to put them on once your in the water. You have to be wearing them beforehand.”
The society also urges those enjoying the water to supervise their children and refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages.
40 per cent of boating related deaths are due to alcohol consumption.
About 500 Canadians die each year from drowning, and the society says one death is too many.
