Lunenburg residents hope a recently awarded tender will clear the air at the town’s waste water treatment plant.
At their last meeting, town council approved hiring Mid Valley Construction to install a bio-filter at the facility.
The project is expected to cost just over $1.1 million dollars split between all three levels of government.
Mayor Rachel Bailey says the funding model allowed the town to have the work done.
“We’re very pleased to be able to get the project done under that granting process because that means that 75 percent of the funding is being covered and the town is just picking up 25 percent of the cost.”
Residents have complained the smell can become unbearable during the warmer months.
Bailey is optimistic the new filter will help eliminate most of the odours coming from the plant.
“We’re certainly hoping it has very significant effect. It is been a proven technology in other areas. This isn’t something we’re taking from the drafting board.”
Bailey says preliminary work to install the bio-filter will begin immediately with most construction getting underway once weather becomes milder.
She expects work will be complete by October.
