Environmentalists are giving the McNeil government’s cap and trade plan a failing grade.
This spring, the Ecology Action Centre hosted a series of public discussions around the province’s proposed system.
Energy Campaign Coordinator Stephen Thomas says a number of issues were brought forward.
“The main point is to reduce emissions, to stimulate the prosperous green economy and to leave no one behind. To be sure that the most vulnerable are supported and folks who need support, get it.”
Thomas is not confident the government can meet those goals.
“Unfortunately, we’re concerned that this system, as proposed, will do none of that. I think it’s important that folks are paying attention and it’s important that government is having that conversation out in the open.”
The federal government has given until 2018 for the provinces to come up with a carbon tax or cap and trade system or they will impose one.
Thomas says government needs to get this right so Nova Scotians aren’t forced to deal with a broken system for decades to come.
