The former Blockhouse and District Fire Department has been demolished.
Van Dyk Excavation was hired to begin tearing down the property this morning after it served the community for 67 years.
A new fire department was built and opened in April on the same property as the old hall.
Chief Paula MacDonald says it’s a bittersweet moment.
“We’re really sad to see it go but in the same breath we know that it’s time. For everything comes an end and unfortunately this is the end of our original building.”
The old hall was completed in 1950 and was renovated in 1976 and 2001.
MacDonald says the former station ran into too many problems including mold, the inability to fit new fire trucks and an unsafe roof.
She expects crews to be on site all week cleaning up debris before a driveway is created for the new fire station.
